We know physical activity can be an amazing way to support our mental health and help us feel good. But it isn’t helpful for everyone all the time and can lead to problems for some of us. It’s important to recognise some of us can develop an unhealthy relationship with exercise.
Over-exercising can be a form of self-harm. Exercising beyond your limits can cause both physical and emotional harm. It might start to be a way for you to avoid difficult emotions instead of getting support too.
If you’re concerned about your training:
- Check out our tips about how to have a healthy relationship with physical activity.
- Speak to someone you trust about how you’re feeling; take a look at our guidance for seeking help.
- Check out Side by Side, Mind’s online platform. Side by Side is an online community where you can listen, share and be heard. Use tags #physicalactivity and #exerciseproblems to connect with others.
Your health and wellbeing is the most important thing, and you need to take care of yourself.
Please don’t worry about missing a few days of training, it’s totally understandable that life sometimes gets in the way! But if you’re concerned that your training has gotten off-track, reach out to the Full Potential team. They’d be happy to advise and re-work your plan if this is needed.
If you’re seriously injured and your GP, healthcare provider or physiotherapist tells you to stop training, it’s important that you stop your training. You should let us – the team at Mind – know as soon as possible. We may be able to defer your place until next year.
If you have a minor injury, the team at Full Potential would be happy to help you adjust your training plan to give you time to recover.
We’re keen to hear how you’ve found the support you’ve received from Full Potential. If you’d like to share your feedback, please email [email protected]
