Improving the Personal Independence Payment

The Government is replacing Disability Living Allowance (DLA) with the Personal Independence Payment (PIP).

Many people with mental health problems require the support that DLA and PIP provides. However, as people are being moved over to PIP or reassessed there have been lots of problems. We are concerned that many of you may lose vital support under these changes.

From big delays in waiting for appointments to poor assessments, it’s clear that the process isn’t working as best as it could for people with mental health problems.

We are campaigning to improve the new benefit and to ensure that it is as fair and effective as possible for you.

Changes to PIP mobility component

On February 23rd 2017, the Government announced that they want to change the way Personal Independence Payments (PIP) are awarded in the future.

We’re working hard to try to stop these changes going through.

In the meantime, we have pulled together what we know about the changes into an FAQ, which you can view here.

Our campaigning work

Many people with mental health problems have been worried about the introduction of the Personal Independent Payment and the assessment for it. To find out more about your experiences we launched a survey. We hope to use this in the next year to inform our response to the next Independent Review into Personal Independence Payment.

Our recent work in this area:

Policy briefings

Our briefings for policymakers set out the changes to welfare and employment support that could make a real difference for people with mental health problems.
