Mind's wellbeing advisers programme
Mind’s wellbeing advisers is a pilot programme, designed with and for young people aged 11-24, to help them access support for their mental health and wellbeing. It was delivered by three local Minds in England and Wales between February 2023 and April 2024 . We are currently fundraising for further delivery.
If you have any questions once you’ve read the information below please contact [email protected]
Our original delivery funders were BBC Children in Need, Deloitte and Mind.
What is a wellbeing adviser?
Our wellbeing advisers were trained to work with young people. They helped young people find help if they were down or anxious and made a plan with them. Then they caught up with them to see how things were going. Anyone aged 11-24 could see an adviser, though each young person was assessed to ensure the service was right for them.
An adviser would chat to a young person about how they feel. Then together they chose what support to try. This could have been things like counselling, community groups, or health services. Advisers could talk over the phone, by video call, or face to face.
Where did we deliver?
Wellbeing advisers were available at three local Minds:
- Coventry and Warwickshire Mind
- Hammersmith, Fulham, Ealing and Hounslow Mind
- Newport Mind
What were the programme aims?
The programme aimed to reach 600 young people. We wanted to help fill the gap for young people whose mental health needs aren’t considered ‘severe’ enough to meet the criteria for specialist support and aren’t being adequately met by schools or primary care.
The programme aimed to improve the support available for this group by:
- Increasing young people’s confidence and their ability to manage their own mental health.
- Improving young people’s mental health outcomes.
- Increasing and strengthening young people’s support networks.
- Empowering young people to influence and lead mental health support for their peers.
We were also particularly seeking to support young people of colour, in poverty, or digitally excluded.
