My mental health has improved hugely

Monday, 30 May 2022 David

David, shop volunteer in Bury St Edmunds, shares how volunteering has helped his mental health.

Why did you start volunteering?
I had mental health problems and my GP put me under a support worker who suggested volunteering. I loved the people straight away, so I decided to stay here.

What do you like the most about volunteering?
I love all the staff, they have become like family to me. I also like feeling useful and having a purpose.

What have you learned from your experience?
My mental health has improved hugely. After I lost my son and wife, I didn't really have a reason to leave the house and now I do. I volunteer but I am also a Sunday Supervisor at the age of 71 and I’m proud of myself.

A few words for your shop team…
You're all so nice to work with and I love being part of your team. I hope to continue working for Mind.
