Mind's response to manifesto commitments on mental health
Various political parties have announced their priorities for mental health as part of their General Election campaigns.
Paul Farmer, Chief Executive of Mind, the mental health charity, said:
"We welcome the announcements from the various political parties on mental health - it's good to see them making it a priority. One in four of us will experience a mental health problem each year, so every parliamentary candidate from every party needs to accept and embrace mental health as a key issue for their constituency.
“Mental health is one of the biggest domestic issues facing the next government. More people than ever are speaking out about mental health and demanding change. As a nation our expectations for better mental health for all are higher than ever and the next government must rise to this challenge.
“Mind has launched its own manifesto, which sets out six key priorities for the next government, including transforming mental health services, employment opportunities, the benefits and back-to-work system, and social and community support. We also want them to commit to improving public attitudes towards people with mental health problems, as well as scrapping discriminatory legislation which currently prevents people with mental health problems accessing the services and support they need to live full independent lives.
“We look forward to hearing what all parties consider to be their priorities and what commitments they will make to improving services and support for all of us with mental health problems.”
