Required kit for running

Getting the right running kit will make your training and racing experience so much more enjoyable. When you’re shopping for kit, you’ll see that it’s easy to spend hundreds of pounds. Remember – the most expensive doesn’t necessarily mean the best for you. We want to make sure you have good quality kit, but not go overboard.

How to find the best running shoes

Having the right running shoes is essential. You’re about to spend a lot of time on your feet so it’s worth investing some time and money into your shoes. The most important thing is that your running shoes are comfortable.

The best way to find the right shoe is to go to a running retail specialist and try on a few different brands and models. Reading and hearing other people's reviews is great, however what works for others might not work for you. You’ll have a different foot shape to them, different arch height and different heel size. This means some brands might be terrible for you, whereas others may fit perfectly. This is why we don’t recommend particular brands.

Top tips for getting new running shoes

  • Your running shoes won’t last forever. As a rough guide, you’ll need to get a new pair after you’ve run about 500 miles in them. Turn them over look at the tread and for signs of wear, you may spot that the tread is worn down depending on your gait. You might also notice aches and pains particularly in your knees. This might be a good time to go into a store, try a new pair on and feel the difference.
  • Break them in slowly. When buying new shoes, it’s best to have a transfer period between the old and new ones. This not only gives you a chance to gradually break the new ones in, but if they’re not working, you can replace them and still have a pair to run in. If your budget allows, it can be useful to have 2 pairs and alternate between them. 
  • Think about your socks. Invest in a good pair of socks – a good running sock will wick moisture away from the foot, keeping it cool and reducing rubbing. If you suffer badly from blisters, we recommend looking for some toe socks.

 

 

What to wear for running

If you can, think about investing in some good running kit. It’ll keep you cool during the summer months, and during the winter you can layer up to stay warm. Thin layers are important, and you want moisture wicking fabrics which will take sweat away from the body.

  • On your bottom half: running tights, leggings or shorts
  • On your top half: singlet, short sleeve t-shirt or long sleeve t-shirt

Should I wear a jacket?

A good quality running jacket will make a huge difference when running. It’s an area we suggest spending a bit of money on if you can, as a good quality jacket will last you a very long time.

A full waterproof jacket will keep you dry when it’s raining, but will be very hot (because if water can’t get in, heat can’t get out, and you’ll sweat more).

Some jackets are a lot thicker than others, so think about whether you are a sweaty runner or one who needs extra warmth.

We know physical activity can be an amazing way to support mental health. However, it isn’t helpful for everyone all the time. It’s important to recognise that some people can develop an unhealthy relationship with physical activity. Anyone can develop an unhealthy relationship with exercise. But this may be more likely if you have certain types of mental health problems.
