Learning disability support

It can be hard to find support if you have a learning disability. And it may feel even harder if you also live with mental health problems. But support is available.

What is a learning disability?

A learning disability is a lifelong condition that affects the way you learn new things.

If you have a learning disability, you may find it more difficult to:

  • Understand complicated information
  • Learn new skills
  • Do everyday activities, like household tasks or interacting with people

A learning disability can have different causes. They usually happen when the brain is still developing. This could be before or during birth, or in early childhood.

It's important that you have the right support if you have a learning disability. This support can help you cope and live well.

Is a learning disability a mental health problem?

A learning disability is not a mental health problem. But if you have a learning disability, you're more likely to experience mental health problems. There are lots of reasons for this.

For example, you may experience negative things, such as abuse. Or face negative attitudes from others. These things could affect your mental health.

You may find it harder to get a diagnosis for a mental health problem. Or to have your mental health problem taken seriously. Doctors may think your mental health symptoms are part of your learning disability.

People may also confuse your learning disability with other conditions. For example, autism or attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).
