What do local Minds do?
Local Minds run mental health services in communities. Anyone can get in touch – you don't need to have a GP referral. Each local Mind is different, but the services they offer might include:
- Talking therapy
- Crisis helplines
- Advocacy
- Employment and training schemes
- Counselling
- Befriending services
How does Mind work with local Minds?
Our network of around 100 local Minds is fundamental to everything we do at national Mind.
We work with local Minds to deliver mental health services to anyone who needs them.
Each local Mind is unique. They are local charities that understand the needs of their community. They tailor their services to match.
As well as delivering services, local Minds:
- Help to plan local mental health services
- Campaign on local mental health issues and join in with national campaigns
- Change attitudes towards mental health in their area
What impact do local Minds have?
There are around 100 local Minds in England and Wales.
There are 833 local Mind trustees.
5673 volunteers support local Minds.
In 2024 - 2025, local Minds supported 661,055 people.
Last year, local Minds ran 1342 services, including therapy and advocacy.
Last year volunteers gave us over 234,000 hours of support.
How are local Minds funded?
Local Minds are independent local mental health charities. So they're responsible for their own funding. They raise money through donations, grants and income from their services.
Most local Minds offer services for free, but some may charge a small fee.

Ensuring quality at local Minds
We assess the quality of our local Minds through the Mind Quality Mark (MQM). This is a set of standards covering all areas of activity.
Local Minds go through a rigorous MQM assessment. This will include:
- Appraising their policies and procedures
- Interviews with trustees, staff, volunteers and people who use services
The MQM makes sure that all local Minds are well-run and meet our expectations. Often they exceed those expectations.
Can I give feedback to my local Mind?
Our local Minds love to hear your feedback, both good and bad. They're independent charities, so they deal with their own comments and complaints.
