Mind responds to NHS mental health services monthly data
NHS Digital has today published its monthly mental health services dataset for April 2024, which provide the most up-to-date insight into a range of community and inpatient mental health services.
Key findings include:
-
7 million people were in contact with MH services at the end of April, 571,948 of whom are under 18
-
19,742 people were subject to the Mental Health Act
-
805 inappropriate Out of Area placements were active – the second highest level in five years
Gemma Byrne, Policy and Campaigns Manager at Mind, said:
“About 20,000 people - the capacity of the 02 Arena in London - were held against their will for treatment under the Mental Health Act in April alone. These are people so unwell that they were at risk of harm to themselves or others. With huge gaps in community care and the cost-of-living continuing to bite, it’s clear more of us are reaching crisis point than ever before.
“These figures are the most up-to-date picture we have of the nation’s mental health – and we are a nation in crisis. Too many people are being sectioned under an outdated law which enables shameful, racist injustices; often in run-down, unsafe hospitals that aren’t fit for purpose.
“Today’s statistics show why it’s essential the new government delivers on its promise to include reforms to the Mental Health Act in its first King’s Speech next week. The Mental Health Bill has been years in the making, with input from countless experts, people with lived experience, and a parliamentary committee. Now, we need to see an updated bill that reflects this feedback and will truly strengthen the rights of people when they are most unwell.
“This is the time for the new government to demonstrate its commitment to transforming our nation’s mental health.”
