The time has come to deliver on shared mental health promises in Wales

Monday, 11 May 2026 Mind

Mind Cymru is calling on the next Welsh Government to turn its attention towards achieving timely access to mental health support for all, as a pledge to have come from every party in the run up to the Senedd election, broadly speaking.

Simon Jones, Head of Policy and Campaigns, said:

“Making mental health support more easily accessible to people across Wales, as well as responding to a growing need for it, are among the few issues to have attracted cross-party agreement throughout this election, providing the next Welsh Government with a clear call to action now the time has come to make good on its promises.

“With broad political agreement and a robust strategy already established in the form of the Mental Health and Wellbeing Strategy for Wales published in 2025, there’s a very real and immediate opportunity for this new administration to make a tangible difference to the lives of people across Wales, starting now.

“The challenge is the same as it was before this election, which is to move away from a system that all too often responds at the point of crisis in favour of providing people with access to the mental health support they need sooner, and in ways that reflect the increasing complexity of the lives they are living here in Wales.

“What we need to see now is this next Welsh Government gain real momentum by building on existing frameworks with a focus on greater investment in mental health services and working collaboratively to help achieve these shared ambitions, to create a Wales where mental health support really is accessible, effective, and equitable for all.”
