Decision to scrap mental health funding protections will “put lives at risk”
In an Instagram message to the Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer and Secretary of State for Health and Social Care Wes Streeting, Mind Chief Executive Dr Sarah Hughes has said the potential scrapping of the Mental Health Investment Standard (MHIS) would “put lives at risk” and “roll back” progress on mental health.
Dr Hughes was speaking in response to concerns that the MHIS – which ensures Integrated Care Boards increase their spending on mental health each year by at least as much as their overall uplift in NHS funding – is set to be scrapped. With 2 million people on NHS mental health waiting lists, Dr Hughes added that such a decision would be catastrophic.
