Mind and Sex Education invite you to cosy up for comfort and win Dr Jean Milburn’s cardigan - knitted by Tom Daley – to raise money for mental health

Tuesday, 03 October 2023 Mind

Sex Education and Olympic gold-medal-winning diver Tom Daley has joined forces with the mental health charity Mind to run a free prize draw to win a money-can’t-buy item from the final season of the hit show on Netflix, Sex Education. Donations generated will help fund LGBTQIA+ mental health support services and projects.

Between Tuesday 03 and Monday 9 October 2023, entrants have the chance to enter to win the cardigan as spotted on DR Jean Milburn, which was knitted by Tom Daley.

Entrants are being encouraged to donate to help those of us experiencing a mental health problem get support. Donations will support LGBTQIA+ projects and services run by Mind and its network of local Minds across England and Wales.

The final series of Sex Education explores mental health and identity with several of the characters, particularly Cal’s character, which Mind’s Media Advisory service has supported.

Sex Education has been nominated for and won multiple awards, including the top prize for Best Comedy Series for season 3 at the 50th International Emmy Awards in 2022.

Tom went viral in 2021 when he was spotted knitting on the sidelines at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. Last year, he began knitting the bespoke multi-coloured cardigan and visited the set in Wales in October 2022 to see it being worn by Dr Jean Milburn during filming for episode seven.

On Friday (29 September), Tom Daley posted to his 3.2million followers on his Instagram a teaser message alongside an image of him wearing the cardigan:

✌️Last year I knitted this for #DrJeanMilburn !! No spoilers but leave a 🧶 in the comments below if you’ve spotted it on #SexEducation

Alex Bushill, Head of Media & PR at Mind says:

“The series has done so much to normalise themes and issues around sex, relationships, and family, issues which so many of us face growing up and yet it’s done with brilliant humour and hope.

“From our own research, we know when mental health issues are depicted on screen it can help people, particularly young people, feel less alone and be more likely to talk to someone about how they are feeling.

“But there is still a long way to go, and mental health stigma still has a huge and lasting impact on those of us with mental health problems. This is particularly true for far too many people who identify as LGBTQIA+ who can be more likely to experience stigma and discrimination, which can lead to feelings of low self-esteem and isolation.

“That’s why we’re so grateful to Tom Daley and to Netflix for gifting us this one-of-a-kind cardigan and in doing so, supporting Mind to be there for even more people who need us.”

Creator of Sex Education, Laurie Nunn said:

"We're really pleased to be working with Mind and Tom Daley for this prize draw, whilst raising awareness and supporting LGBTQIA projects. Tom visited the set of Sex Education last year, and our cast and crew were thrilled to welcome him. He's knitted a wonderful multi-coloured cardigan that is perfectly befitting for Jean, and it's lovely to know it will now be a treasured prize for one lucky winner."
