Abbreviations and acronyms

We try to avoid using too many acronyms and abbreviations on our site. If you need to use an abbreviation or an acronym, spell it out in full the first time you mention it and put the short version in brackets after it. For example:

  • Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
  • Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT)

After the first instance of use, just use the short version.

Common abbreviations and acronyms don't need to be defined. For example:

  • NHS
  • GP
  • BBC

If you're not sure what the abbreviation or acronym for the name of an organisation is, follow what they use on their website. For example:

  • National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE)
