Laing O’Rourke

Mind has partnered with construction and infrastructure company, Laing O’Rourke, since 2015. Since the start of the partnership Laing O’Rourke have taken a number of practical steps to tackle some of the issues around mental health within their organisation and sector as well as fundraising for Mind.

Laing O’Rourke has implemented training in mental health awareness for managers as well as recruiting more than 60 mental health champions from across the business. These volunteers help to challenging stigma in the workplace, make conversations about mental health commonplace and encourage those who need help to feel comfortable asking for it.

In addition, Laing O’Rourke signed the Time to Change Pledge in 2016 to demonstrate their commitment to tackling stigma and discrimination around mental health in the workplace. They have also taken part in our Workplace Wellbeing Index in 2016 and 2017.

Silvana Martin, health and wellbeing leader said: “I am thrilled we have been awarded silver in the second Mind Workplace Wellbeing Index. In a year, our score has jumped by 20 per and it is testament to all that we’ve achieved in the last 12 months. We now have more than 60 mental health champions across the business, we’ve provided Mental Health First Aid training to 20 employees and we are developing our own in-house capability in this area so we can self-deliver this training programme. Our mindfulness and resilience workshops have been booked out and we have seen some of our projects introduce their own bespoke mental health plans. The focus now moves to embedding best practice across all our policies and further support to line managers to enable them to manage the mental wellbeing of their team members.”

In 2018, Laing O’Rourke is hosting a large-scale company-wide fundraising event for Mind and British Heart Foundation promoting exercise as a key enabler to maintaining mental wellbeing.  Employees from across the organisation will be taking part in the Hearts and Minds cycle challenge aiming to raise £160,000 and cycle the distance between their head offices in Dartford and Australia for the two charities.
