Mind responds to announcement of rapid review of safety in mental health inpatient settings

Monday, 23 January 2023 Mind

The UK government have today announced a rapid review into patient safety in mental health inpatient settings across England.

Commenting on the announcement, Sarah Hughes, Chief Executive at Mind, said:

“The launch of a rapid review into patient safety in mental health inpatient settings across England is a positive step from the UK government. This announcement comes in the wake of deeply concerning reports over the last few months and indeed years from some patients and their loved ones about failings in mental health hospitals across the country. It goes without saying that the voices of people with lived experience of this must be central to this review. Mind has been calling for a full statutory inquiry into the state of inpatient mental health settings since the abuse at Edenfield was reported in September.

“This review needs to gather information on the much deeper-set systemic failings in mental health care, and establish what works in successful mental health settings that provide therapeutic and safe care. But alone, this review will not be enough to fix the crisis in our mental health inpatient services. Once this review is concluded we will need to see the political leadership and willingness to invest in mental health to address the gaping holes in mental health care in England and Wales."
