CCGs & Local Health Boards can help

Clinical Commissioning Groups (CCGs) in England and Local Health Boards in Wales play a key role in influencing what services look like at the local level. We believe there's a lot they can do to improve primary care services so they are better at supporting the mental health of their patients and staff.

We believe improving mental health support is vital because:

  • One in four people experience a mental health problem in any given year and the majority of those who get treatment receive it within primary care.
  • Around one in three GP appointments involves a mental health component.
  • Half of GPs have been found to be at high risk of burnout, and 16 per cent report experiencing a significant and unmanageable amount of work-related stress.

Apart from better mental health services delivered through traditional primary care outlets such as GP practices, we believe your local voluntary sector can also help.

Our briefing for CCGs and Local Health Boards

We’ve produced two briefings about mental health in primary care (including GP practices) one for England, one for Wales.

Our briefings set out the challenges facing people with mental health problems, or those worried about their mental health, when they try and access support from their GP practice. It also makes recommendations on how to make these services better.

Over the coming months we’ll be working with CCGs and Local Health Boards to improve mental health support from primary care services like GP practices across the country.
