The third Monday in January - in 2017 this falls on 16th January - is often labelled "the most depressing day of the year", so-called Blue Monday.

The concept has no foundation in scientific research and, here at Mind, we think it’s dangerously misleading.

Those of us who live with depression know that those feelings aren’t dictated by the date.

Implying that they are perpetuates the myth that depression is just 'feeling a bit down', something that doesn’t need to be taken seriously.

We hope to do something about that - for example, by getting #blueanyday trending on social media.

What is depression really like?

"Nothing felt unusual when, one day I woke up feeling like I was having a bit of an off day.

But one day led to the next and then into weeks. 

What started as a bad day was getting worse and I started to feel really sad. As each day went on I would feel worse. I felt worthless and anxious. I became irritable and would argue over silly little things with my partner. One week it got really bad, I just lay in bed. I didn’t go to the gym, I couldn't motivate myself to go to work. 

I felt like I couldn’t go on fighting."

"I had always wondered why I felt so different. I often had feelings of sadness, loneliness and despair…

I convinced myself these feelings would pass. Three years later they hadn’t. 

I couldn’t get rid of these hours, days, and weeks of what felt like sinking into a big dark hole that I couldn’t climb out of.”

The reality

At its most severe, depression can

  • stop people being able to work or socialise,
  • make them feel isolated from everyone around them
  • and even lead to self-harm or suicidal thoughts.

Taking it seriously

Many people don’t talk about how they feel, or seek help, because they feel ashamed or worry that they won’t be taken seriously.

This has to change.

We at Mind, mental health charity want to turn Blue Monday around, to talk about the reality of depression and let people know that support is out there.

How you can help

  • Show your support on social media using the hashtag #blueanyday (it would be amazing if we challenged the #bluemonday hashtag trend!)
  • Make a donation so that we can support people who need us, all year round.

Facts about depression

  • Depression varies very much from person to person, there’s no ‘normal’ experience of depression. It can also vary in severity over time.
  • There’s no single ‘cause’ of depression. Sometimes it appears for no obvious reasons, other times it may be linked to difficult life events or trauma. There is some evidence that there may be a genetic element, too.
  • By 2020, depression will be the second leading cause of health problems in the world.

What can help?

  • It might be hard, but try to keep in touch with those around you. Even a text message can keep you feeling connected and remind you that you’re not alone.
  • Keeping active is also beneficial, as it has been proven to lift your mood and increase your energy levels.
  • Look after yourself, you deserve it. Take a long bath, make yourself a nice meal, do anything that makes you feel good about yourself.
  • It’s important that you seek help and try to break the negative cycle of your thoughts. Treatments such as CBT or other talking therapies can help, or you might benefit from medication.

Where can I get help?

  • Speak to the people around you, who care about you. Being open with your friends and family will help them understand how they can help you.
  • Make an appointment to see your GP. Be honest with them about how you’re feeling and ask how they can help.
