Registration

It costs £50 per person to enter Mind Hike: Dawn to Dusk.

You have to be 18 or over to take part in Mind Hike: Dawn to Dusk. Under 18s are not permitted.

Registrations will close when all available places have been filled. If you have missed out on a place and would like to be added to the waiting list in case of cancellations, please email [email protected].

A welcome pack full of hints and tips to help you get started on and make the most of your fundraising will be emailed to you as soon as you sign up.

When you raise 50% of your fundraising goal  you will be able to get your Mind t-shirt to wear while you train. Please let us know when you have raised this amount so we can make sure you get your t-shirt.

Groups

Yes! Each person taking part in Mind Hike: Dawn to Dusk will need to register individually and pay the £50 registration fee. Please give us the names of everyone you are taking part with when you register.

Of course! Everyone in your group will need to commit to raising £375 per person, but you are welcome to fundraise together and share a fundraising page.

You can either all set up a JustGiving page and link them through a team page, or you can set up one fundraising page and list all of your team mates' names in the story section.

The rooms in the accommodation are single sex dormitories. Please let us know who you are walking with and we will endeavour to put same sex members of your group in the same dorm.

Fundraising

We ask each person taking part in Mind Hike: Dawn to Dusk to commit to raising £375 to help us make sure no one has to face a mental health problem alone.

To help you reach your fundraising goal and still have plenty of time to train for the hike, we ask that you fundraise according to the following schedule:

1st May 2021 – 30% raised (£110).
16th July 2021 – 50% raised (£184.50) - once you have reached this you will be sent a free Mind t-shirt.
30th July 2021 – 80% raised (£300) – once you have reached this your place will officially be confirmed.
9th November 2020 – Fundraising complete (£375).

 

There are many costs to Mind to organise an event on the scale of Mind Hike: Dawn to Dusk and to run it in a way that is as safe and enjoyable as possible for our Mind Hikers. 

We ask for 80% of your fundraising to be sent to us 10 weeks before the event to make sure these costs are covered ahead of the event. Everything you raise on top of this will go straight towards funding Mind's services and campaigns.

Our team of fundraising experts will do everything they can to help you keep on track with your fundraising and make sure you reach your goal. We also recommend making a fundraising plan and working towards the fundraising schedule to make fundraising as easy as possible.

If it isn't possible for you to raise the minimum sponsorship in time for the deadline, we won't be able to cover the cost of your place on the hike and will be in touch about your options.

Fundraising through JustGiving is very quick and easy. Once you have registered for Mind Hike: Dawn to Dusk, simply go to JustGiving, create an account and set up your page.

Customise your page with your story and photos of you to encourage more donations and share the link to your page regularly.

Mind Hike: Dawn to Dusk is a bespoke event created by national Mind, and all donations will go directly to national Mind.

We understand that the difference between national and local Minds often causes confusion and that many people are not aware of our federated structure.

We at national Mind are a separate charity from the local Mind organisations, and while we have similar aims and values, we fulfil slightly different roles. We provide the nationwide information services, the Infoline, and campaign nationally for support and respect for everyone experiencing a mental health problem. This structure allows the local Minds to work on front line services specifically for the communities that they work with.

Preparing for Mind Hike

Mind Hike: Dawn to Dusk is a physically challenging, yet incredibly rewarding event. You will be expected to walk up to 12 hours including short breaks, on varied terrain.

You do not need to be an experienced hiker to complete Mind Hike: Dawn to Dusk, but whatever level you are at, we strongly recommend training before the event.

We will provide you a training plan and tips in the lead up to the hike to help you fully prepare.

You will need to wear comfortable hiking gear during Mind Hike: Dawn to Dusk, including walking boots and a head torch. We will send you a kit list when you register.

When you register for Mind Hike: Dawn to Dusk, we will invite you to join the Facebook group exclusive to people taking part in Mind Hike: Dawn to Dusk Hadrian's Wall. Here you can ask your fellow Mind Hikers if anyone lives nearby and arrange to meet up for a training hike.

Travel

No, you will need to make your own way to and from Mind Hike: Dawn to Dusk. Directions to the hostel can be found here.

Check-in at YHA The Sill at Hadrian's Wall and registration for Mind Hike: Dawn to Dusk open at 5pm on Friday evening.

Mind Hike: Dawn to Dusk and the celebration dinner will finish around 7pm on the Saturday. You will have been hiking for 12 hours and awake for longer than that.

If you are driving to and from Mind Hike: Dawn to Dusk, we suggest booking an extra night of accommodation and driving home the next day, or travel with someone who can drive you home while take a well-earned rest!

Please do not drive yourself home immediately after the hike.

Accommodation

One night of accommodation at YHA The Sill Hadrian's Wall is included. If you would like to stay at the hostel on the Saturday you can contact them directly to arrange this.

All rooms in the accommodation are single sex shared dormitories. Sharing a dorm with your new teammates is all part of the Mind Hike: Dawn to Dusk experience and a great way to get to know people before the hike.

If you are part of a group, we will endeavour to put same sex members of the group in the same dorm but this cannot be guaranteed.

No, bedding will be provided. You will need to bring your own towel.

The accommodation will be available for Mind Hikers only. Your partner, friends and family are welcome to come along and support you, but they will need to arrange their own accommodation.

If you would prefer to stay in alternative accommodation with your supporters, that is absolutely fine. You will need to be at YHA The Sill for registration, dinner and the safety briefing at 5pm on Friday and ready to set off from the hostel at 6am on Saturday.

If you choose not to stay at the accommodation that is included, we cannot offer refunds for this cost because the bed will already be reserved.

Mind Hike weekend

Friday 8 October

5pm - Check-in at YHA The Sill at Hadrian's Wall and registration for Mind Hike: Dawn to Dusk opens.

6pm - Dinner, welcome speeches and safety briefing.

Saturday 9 October

5am - Breakfast in the hostel.

6am - Mind Hike: Dawn to Dusk starts.

6pm - Return to accommodation after hiking for 12 hours. Celebration dinner.

The route will take you through the beautiful Northumberland countryside and you will pass ancient Roman artefacts.

The route is predominantly on good paths, but it's the variation of footpaths that makes this challenge a unique and fun experience.

Whilst this challenge does not include any real hill walking, there are section of the routes that include a significant amount of short, sharp ascents and descents that add up to a surprising amount of ascent at the end of the challenge.

While the route is planned in advance, it is flexible to allow for varying walking speeds in the group or diversions due to adverse weather conditions. This means we are unable to say how far you will walk in terms of distance, but the hike will take 12 hours to complete.

It's likely you will walk between 20-30km, to help you with your training plan.

No. A team of professional mountain leaders will be leading the way throughout the hike, you won't be expected to navigate the route yourself.

With the event taking place in October, it is likely we will set off in the dark and finish hiking as it is starting to get dark again.

It's essential to bring a headtorch with spare batteries and we recommend doing a short, safe, local training walk at night to practise walking with your headtorch.

No. You only need to carry what you need for the hike and anything else can be left in the accommodation.

There will be a hot buffet dinner on Friday and Saturday nights, plus a cold buffet breakfast on Saturday morning. A sandwich lunch will be provided on Saturday and other snacks and treats will be on offer throughout the hike.

Examples of dinner options could be pasta, jacket potatoes, mild curry. Something hearty to help keep you going.

Vegetarian options will be available and please let us know of any other dietary requirements you have when you register.

Some snacks will be provided, but we recommend bringing your own snacks and treats.

Cancellation

If you're no longer able to take part in the hike, please contact us as soon as you can and we can discuss your options, such as booking you onto another hike.

Please note registration fees are non-refundable and non-transferrable..

If you aren't able to complete the hike, you will be looked after by our team of professional mountain leaders and on-site doctor. There's no pressure to finish the hike if you become injured or fatigued and you will still get a well-earned medal at the end.
