Mind member Nadine: Why I shared my story

Last year, Mind member Nadine shared her experience of mental health problems and how she’s been supported by Mind for our Christmas fundraising appeal. This involved writing about her experiences, getting photographed and featuring in a short film.

Below, Nadine tells us why she decided to get involved in the project, what the process was like and what she gained from the experience.

If you have been helped by Mind, particularly in the run up to Christmas, we’d love to hear from you. By taking part, you will help to provide support for so many other people. If you are interested, get in touch with the team at [email protected] for any questions or information.

Why did you decide to get involved?

I heard about the opportunity to share my experience via the Mind Membership enews. I decided to get involved because I felt it was time for me to share my personal story. I met all the criteria for what the appeal needed and I had also worked with mind in the past so I knew how everything worked.

What was the process like?

The process although daunting was really quite simple and everything was explained to me in a way that I could understand.  It involved a telephone call with Laura from the Digital team at Mind to put together the blog and get more background information on me about my experiences. Then a few weeks later, Louisa from the Fundraising team came down with a small film crew to film the videos to go alongside the campaign.  The video process was quite intimidating but everyone involved made the process extremely easy. It took around 4 hours for the filming and around half an hour for the telephone call conversation.

How did you feel after you had done it?

I felt somewhat overwhelmed and anxious after I had done the filming. I was fine after the telephone call but the filming was another kettle of fish. However I emailed Laura and Louisa and they were there to support me with how I was feeling and put my mind at ease.

Getting involved with the project made me feel proud of myself and made me realise how much of a massive achievement it was for me to have taken part and to be pretty central to the whole campaign. I learnt a lot about myself from the experience especially after hearing the feedback from the Mind team and the kind comments from people who watched the videos. I realised I could do anything I put my mind too.

Would you recommend this to other members to do?

I would definitely recommend other members to share their story with Mind.  I would reassure them that they would be supported throughout the whole process and that they would be doing a phenomenal thing to help the charity if they chose to get involved.
