Thank you from our Chief Executive
Dear National Lottery Players,
As we celebrate the 25th birthday of the National Lottery in the UK, we want to say thank you.
Since the National Lottery came to the UK in 1994, grassroots sport across the nations has benefitted so much from funding that comes from your lottery ticket. Here at Mind your contribution has helped us to support thousands of people with mental health problems to become physically active or try a new sport in their local community. Being physically active is not only beneficial to your physical health, it can reduce the risk of developing depression by up to 30%, lift your mood and help you to better manage stress. Participants in our Get Set to Go programme told us it was an important first step in their recovery, and that they felt better able to cope with their day-to-day lives.
Get Set to Go has saved my life. It has turned my life around and really helped me to cope with my mental health. It helps us all to socialise outside of the groups. I have done some fantastic activities, had loads of fun and sampled sports that I’ve never had the chance to try before.
Participant, Get Set to Go
Because you play The National Lottery, we have been able to deliver our award winning Get Set to Go programme in partnership with 27 local Minds and share our learning across the sports and physical activity sector. With your help to date we have;
- Supported over 6,000 people with mental health problems to become physically active in their local communities
- Trained 287 peer sports volunteers who use their own experiences to help others in a group and one to one basis
- Provided Mental Health Awareness for Sport and Physical Activity training to over 2,000 coaches and instructors helping them to create more welcoming and inclusive environments
- Raised awareness of the impact of physical activity on mental health with millions of people through our campaigns and information resources.
From the thousands of people becoming active in local communities to the coaches and instructors who have received training to better understand mental health, these opportunities are made possible because you play.
From everyone at our organisation, thank you. Because you play, is making dreams come true across the country.
