Davey Graham Guitar Auction
Posted Monday 14 June 2010
A guitar belonging to the late great Davey Graham has been auctioned with proceeds being shared between Mind and Cecil Sharp House. The much coveted guitar was finally sold for £4,300 to a huge fan of Davey’s work.
Davey Graham was an icon of English music, cited by artists such as Paul Simon, Jimmy Page and Bert Jansch as being a major influence. After years of ill health, Davey returned to guitar playing in 2005, using two guitars specially built for him by Roger Bucknall of Fylde Guitars in Cumbria.
Roger Bucknall said:
It was almost full circle for me, having been inspired to play and make guitars by this man, and then to be asked to make him these guitars, and to meet him at last.
Davey played the guitars from 2005 to 2007, on stage and on recordings. He died at the end of 2008. Roger Bucknall was left one of the guitars and generously chose to auction it with all the proceeds going to two organisations that meant so much to Davey, one of those being Mind.
On behalf of everyone at Mind, we wish to say a huge thank you to Roger and to everyone involved with this generous donation.
