Mind responds to Daily Mail

Posted: Wednesday 19 May 2010

Janet Street-Porter’s assertions in her Saturday Daily Mail column that depression is a trendy ‘must have accessory’, that many people have no reason to be depressed and stigma is not a problem have caused widespread public outrage, and Mind’s anti-stigma coalition Time to Change has not let the article go unchallenged. Mind, Rethink and Time to Change have joined forces to respond to the article with a letter to the Daily Mail editor Paul Dacre. View our response here.

The backlash has prompted responses from bloggers like one at The Telegraph and has spread from the Daily Mail’s own website to Facebook and Twitter. If you want to join the debate on Facebook, visit the Mind or Time to Change groups.

Updated 21 May: Alastair Campbell's moving response in The Mirror can be found here.
