Mind today welcomes the launch of a new initiative that will help people who are struggling with the impact of the recession on their mental health. The NHS Stressline is a freephone number – 0300 123 2000 – where you can speak to trained health advisors for practical advice and emotional support.
See Paul Farmer being interviewed about the NHS Stressline on BBC News Channel.
Mind’s Chief Executive Paul Farmer said: “This year lots of people have been facing a tough time. There has been a significant increase in people losing their jobs and often as a result losing their home or relationship, all of which are major triggers for developing mental health problems.
"For some people struggling with the emotional fallout of the recession this could be the first time they have experienced any kind of mental health problem and it can be incredibly hard to know where to turn. The NHS Stressline will act as a signpost helping people to navigate their way through what can be a very complicated system so they can reach expert advice as quickly as possible. It provides the opportunity for people to get help early instead of waiting until a point of crisis.
"However, this is just one piece of the jigsaw. Mind is campaigning for financial institutions to take a serious look at how they respond to people with mental health problems who are in financial dire straits. Poor customer service and a heavy handed approach can exacerbate mental distress with tragic consequences."
