Mind comments on the case of Peter Bryan
Posted Wednesday 16 March 2005
At Mind's annual conference, tomorrow focusing on the Draft Mental Health Bill with the Ministers' addresses, Richard Brook, Chief Executive of Mind, said:
"This is a terrible case characterised by unique and extreme factors. We
recognise how difficult this is for those close to the victims and
sympathise with those most affected.
However, we are appalled by the sensationalist media response that demonises all mental health service users.
This irresponsible and wholly unwarranted approach does nothing to address the system failures involved but it does betray all those in society with mental health problems.
This extraordinary case should not be allowed to generate prejudice or used to justify the draft Mental Health Bill's additional restrictions on the
lives of thousands of people with mental health problems."
