Information about the mental health of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people is not collected at national level in the UK.
However, the available evidence suggests that LGBT people are at higher risk than heterosexual people of suicidal feelings, self-harm, drug or alcohol misuse and mental health problems such as depression and anxiety.
The reasons for these findings are complex and not yet fully understood. However, poor mental health in LGBT people has often been linked to experiences of homophobic discrimination and bullying.
In this video teenagers talk about their experiences of coming to terms with their sexuality, and coming out to their friends and family.
