The Creative Therapies Fund

Some people struggle to express themselves in words. But art, drama, music and dance can help say it all.“In my drawings I found a voice, a way to say what I was going through and who I was without having to open my mouth.”Creativity is Therapy“Without art I would not be here today. I feel that art has saved my life many times.”Be a champion of creative expression.

How can I be a champion?

We're looking for financial support to fund local projects that deliver therapy through art, dance, drama, music and voice. Thanks to the generosity of our supporters we have already kickstarted a number of creative therapy projects, but we still need vital funds to help reach others who need our help.

What is Mind's Creative Therapies Fund?

We, along with Mind Ambassador Stuart Semple, set up the Creative Therapies Fund to help people make sense of their mental health problems through creativity. Through local projects, it provides a way of using the arts —for example, music, painting, clay, dance, voice or drama —in a supportive environment with a trained therapist.

How does it help people?

The therapeutic effects of creative activities can be enormous. It can lower stress levels, fear and anxiety. It can provide a sense of freedom. For those who can't find words to express how they feel, it can be a lifesaver.

For some people, creative therapies provides more profound and long-lasting healing than more standard forms of treatment for mental health problems. They provide a powerful means of expression and a release from trauma.

I suffer from borderline personality disorder and I have very low self esteem. I have one comfort and that's singing. With the help and support from the choir, staff at Mind and Lifeline I have finally been able to complete some courses which I have never accomplished before and I no longer feel as worthless. I finally feel like I have a future.

Example projects

  • An art and music festival in Kingston, Surrey
  • A choir project in Hackney, London
  • Launch of a daily activity group in Caerphilly helping people develop skills and be active in a supportive environment
I firmly believe that by opening up creative outlets for those whose mental health is suffering, we will change lives.
