Men and mental health: get it off your chest

I couldn't communicate with people. I felt ashamed. [I thought] 'There's something not right with me. I must be weaker. You should be out having a laugh with your friends...'

Campaign for meeting the mental health needs of men

Mind research shows that men can struggle with being open about mental health issues. Men are less likely to seek help than women and more likely to vent their problems through anger or self-medicating with alcohol or drugs.

The Men and Mental Health campaign has been calling for a men’s mental health strategy to be created. The campaign has so far been successful and Mind, along with Men’s Health Forum, has been commissioned by the Department of Health to write a men’s mental health guidance paper in 2010.

We believe:

  • the health service should make it easier for men to seek help and provide treatment and support that takes their needs into account.

What we are fighting for

We want:

  • PCTs, employers and community groups to take the mental health needs of men into account when planning and delivering services.
  • the current reorganisation of the NHS in Wales to be seen as an opportunity to address the issues around men and mental health.
