Protect benefits for disabled people

Posted Wednesday 9 September 2009

UPDATE: Disability Living Allowance will not be scrapped!

Mind, in partnership with a number of disability charities, has launched a public petition to make clear to the Government the vital importance of Disability Living Allowance and Attendance Allowance, and how strong feelings are on this issue.

Please sign the petition show your support!

The petition reads as follows:

We the undersigned petition the Prime Minister to recognise the vital support that Attendance Allowance (AA) and Disability Living Allowance (DLA) provide to disabled people, and to ensure that these benefits are secured and are not removed as part of any future reform of the social care system in England.

Who are the other disability charities in partnership with Mind launching this petition? Could you please supply a list of names?

    Hi Linda

This petition was drafted by the Disability Charities Consortium: RNIB, RNID, Mencap, Mind, RADAR, Scope and Leonard Cheshire Disability.

Benefits are not devolved matters and therefore perhaps your petition should indicate this, as my understanding is that the reforms would not only be detrimental to England but the whole of the UK. Mind is an England and Wales organisation and some of your partners in this are UK-wide, this should be reflected more effectively and accurately in your campaigning-i.e which issues effect England only, which England and Wales and which will have impact in the whole of Great Britain or the United Kingdom.

do they realise that a majority of people need this money to care properly for who ever they care for

What action is being taken on the still present discrimination that people with Mental Health problems face when claiming or re-caliming DLA.
My DLA is lower rate on both payment types, this is because I have few phyiscal problems and they do not take interest in my permanent Mental Health problems
I am a second class claiment!

I'm rather disappointed that none of the charities specifically dealing with the elderly, such as Help the Aged or Age Concern, are included.

It is very clear from the Green Paper, and from comments at the various roadshows, that by far the biggest threat is to Attendance Allowance.

Not that I take any of the assurances being issued about DLA remotely seriously, but no such assurances have been forthcoming about AA. None.

please don't stop AA and DLA. As a forward moving country, why go back to 17th century treatment of the ill and disabled? The poor laws of that time meant that local parishes (or as in todays case, local authorities) could determine who was deserving and who was not. If found to be deserving, you had to wear a patch which only added to the stigma of getting assistance. If found undeserving you were left to your own devices....surely we can't go back to this type of system in this day and age?

i noticed on another thread that you had closed the comments section. Was this becuase most of the commnets were neg. towards Mind. As a mentally ill person since the age of four. I have prepared myself for when the torys come into power. I have written my will, sold or have given everything away. ON paper I own nothing. I will then take my own life when they take my benfits away. The thought of losing my benfits and having to go and sign on , is far worse than death. Please mind start to fight back for us. Leaflets and education dont work any more. People dont care. But hit them with a writ and hit there pockets, then they notice.

    Hello Dave,
There may have been a temporary technical problem with the comments function, as we haven't closed it. I can assure you that we don't censor negative comments about Mind - we hope to stimulate a lively discussion that represents all view points.
    Thanks for posting your comment.

It would be great if the petition and the link to it were more prominently flagged up on this website. I'm not asking MIND to do anything I haven't already done myself (google my name to find my site if you don't believe me!) but, of course, a major disability charity gets a lot more hits than I do.

    Hi Will

We agree - it's really important to keep flagging this one up. We've posted an update today: http://www.mind.org.uk/blog/2178_thousands_sign_disability_living_allowance_petition
