Mind takes over the fourth plinth

Posted: Thursday 13 August 2009

Mind stress ball on the fourth plinthWith the summer holidays on and the sun out, London is brimming with tourists, and what better way to advertise Mind's work than have the Mind mascot - a stressball - standing on the fourth plinth in Trafalgar Square as part of the One & Other project. Sculptor Antony Gormley has asked anyone in the UK to occupy the plinth, a space normally reserved for statues of kings and generals, for one hour each during July to September.

Arlette, a brave Mind supporter, stood on the plinth in the stressball costume for an hour, I took over and donned the costume myself for the trip back to the office on the London tube.

Starting in Trafalgar Square, we walked towards Charing Cross tube station. Getting down the stairs was slightly tricky, as I could not see my feet and kept accidentally hitting people coming in the opposite direction. They seemed slightly unsure of what a large stressball was doing there....

Mind stress ball on the tubeI squeezed onto the tube and became just another commuter reading the free Metro paper. None of the other passengers seemed remotely surprised to find a huge stressball standing next to them, and did their best to ignore me!

The stressball's next appearance will be running the Adidas Womens 5km challenge in Hyde Park on Sunday 6th September.

Watch Arlette on the plinth on the One & Other project website.

It's amazing how non-plussed people can be on the underground...well done to Arlette for her job on the plinth, looking forward to any future stressball adventures!
