Mind charity shops

Mind charity shops started in 1961, with the first one in Harrogate.

Our shops sell goods generously donated by members of the public. If you would like to donate goods, please click here: Donations. The only stock we buy in are greetings cards and Christmas cards, so over 95 per cent of our sales come from donated goods.

All our shops have paid managers but they are supported by a dedicated band of volunteers. Over 1,300 volunteers weekly give up some of their spare time to help with all the jobs that need to done such as sorting, steaming and pricing clothing.

We have to pay the market rent for the premises, plus heating, lighting, telephone and so on. We qualify for mandatory rate relief and as a result generally pay only 20 per cent of rates. Once all the costs are deducted what remains is passed over to Mind through Gift Aid. As part of Mind's commitment to the work done by the local Mind associations, over 20 per cent of the money raised by the shops goes back to support the work of the LMAs.
