Skills for Health - National Occupational Standards for Psychological Therapies
This is a letter from Skills for Health, an external organisation.
Invitation to Participate:
Development of National Occupational Standards (NOS) for Psychological Therapies
Skills for Health is working with practitioners to develop National Occupational Standards in the area of Psychological Therapies. The current project is focusing on the following four therapy areas which are:
- Cognitive and Behavioural Therapy (CBT)
- Psychodynamic/Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy
- Systemic and Family Therapy
- Humanistic, Person- centred/Experiential Therapy
National Occupational Standards (NOS) describe performance as outcomes of a person's work. They focus on what the person needs to be able to do, as well as what they must know and understand to work effectively. NOS can be described as markers of good practice and as such, contribute to enhancing patient/client care.
Background to the Project
At this time there is heightened interest in the benefits of psychological therapies supported by the Department of Health’s (DH) initiative Improving Access to Psychological Therapies and the Scottish Executive’s report Delivering for Mental Health, as well as similar initiatives in Wales and Northern Ireland. In addition to this the DH is leading on a separate project around the statutory regulation of counsellors and psychotherapists.
The work of this project is complex and challenging and the process involves translating the knowledge of Psychological Therapy practitioners, researchers and trainers into NOS. Making good practice explicit in the form of NOS is an important contribution to improving standards of patient/client care.
The project team has established expert and professional groups for Cognitive and Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and Psychodynamic Psychoanalytic Therapy. The draft NOS developed by these groups are now available for further review and comment via our website. Details regarding locating the documents and providing feedback are stated below. The project continues to refine the draft NOS developed for the above modalities and is due to commence NOS development for the other two modality areas from September 2008.
How you can help
Skills for Health invite you to consult on the draft NOS. As service users, we are interested in your thoughts in relation to the NOS being developed, particularly in relation to whether the NOS translate the relationship between the therapist and the client in a way that is of benefit to the client. Your comments and thoughts will be considered as part of the further refinement of the draft standards.
Currently the draft CBT NOS and the draft NOS for Psychodynamic Psychoanalytic Therapy are on the Skills for Health website.
You can view the draft NOS by clicking on the Documents tab. Feedback can be provided via the website by clicking on the Feedback tab.
The draft NOS developed throughout the remainder of this project for the remaining two modalities will be added to the site as they are developed.
If you have any queries about this project or the draft NOS, please contact darren.buxton@skillsforhealth.org.uk
Yours sincerely
