Recommendations for office environments

Mind’s latest campaign 'Building solutions' focuses on the environments we spend our time in. Our new report Improving office environments (read the report in non-printable pdf format) reveal key concerns regarding the often negative impact our work environments have on our mental wellbeing. In light of this research, Mind has compiled a list of key recommendations.

Mind's key recommendations:

  • Employers and managers should be open to suggestions of change and improvements to their workplaces made by workers, and should consult with safety representatives before making such changes.
  • Formal complaints about the physical environment of the workplace should be given proper consideration and acted upon, with creative solutions found where possible.
  • A supportive working environment needs to be provided for people who have experienced mental distress.
  • Workers who suffer from mental health problems and whose condition is covered by the Disability Discrimination Act 1995 (DDA) should feel able to ask for reasonable adjustments to their physical working conditions.
  • There should be adequate regulation of the office temperature to ensure that workers are not subject to extremes of either hot or cold in the workplace.
  • Workplace environments should be maintained to a good standard of repair.
  • Workers should be adequately consulted over decoration in their workplaces.
  • Workers should have sufficient desk space to be able to comfortably carry out their job.
  • Noise should be kept to a minimum and quiet space should be provided where possible.
  • Workers should have access to natural light and windows where possible.
  • Workplaces should be adequately ventilated.
  • Employers should look at introducing environment champions who can promote aspects of the physical environment in their offices.
