Mind's Access all ages demands

  • The Government and Welsh Assembly Government must act now to combat discrimination and stigma around mental health in later life.
  • Older people must have equal access to the same level and quality of support and treatment available to other age groups.
  • Treatment choice should be a right, not a gamble, for older people with mental health issues.
  • If people experience mental distress in later life they must be supported by people who have expertise in mental health care.
  • People who seek treatment for mental distress in later life must be properly consulted and informed about any treatment they undertake.
  • Older people must not be exposed to potentially harmful treatments for their mental distress without good cause and should be properly consulted and informed about any treatment they undertake.
  • Planning for mental health needs should be promoted as a core element of preparation for later life.
  • People with mental health problems are experts in their own condition and should be involved in all decisions about their own care and treatment, whatever their age.
