Frequently asked questions

We know you've got a million and one questions to ask us, so to help you out here are the answers to the most common questions people ask. If you need to know anything else then just drop us a line!

What's included in the cost?

Flights and all internal travel, accommodation, meals, water, refreshments, medical support, guides and experienced expedition staff.

What kind of support will I get?

Mind will give you a full support pack with tips and advice on raising the sponsorship money and training advice. In addition, an experienced team member is always on hand to answer any questions you may have.

What happens to my luggage when I'm trekking?

This will be transferred by support vehicles, porters or mules. You are advised to take a decent sized day sack when cycling or trekking for your camera, sun cream, water and so on.

How many people take part?

We are limited to 50 people per trip, and places fill up quickly. This may seem like a big group but, from experience, we know a group of this size provides a great deal of friendship, fun and moral support.

Can I extend my stay?

Yes, subject to availability. This may be subject to an administration cost.

Do I need to be fit?

Yes, but you don't need to be super fit. Most people who take part in these events are not seasoned trekkers or cyclists. However, in order to gain maximum benefit and enjoyment from the trip, you must be able to comfortably trek or cycle for seven to eight hours a day on varying terrain.

What do I need to bring?

A suggested packing list will be sent to you on registering. You will need to have adequate travel insurance for this type of trip that includes emergency return home by air. We will recommend a policy.

Am I the right kind of person to do this?

If you have enthusiasm and a sense of adventure, then yes! People from all walks of life take part in these challenges and participants from past events have ranged in age from 18 to well into retirement! Most people will not know anyone else on the trip but we also welcome couples and teams. Either way, you will go home with many new friends.

What about food and drink?

On all Mind trips, food is important. You will receive three filling meals a day and snacks using available local produce. We can of course cater for vegetarians and other dietary requirements – as long as you let us know in advance. Water will be provided throughout the challenge days.

Where will I stay?

You will stay in a combination of camping and hotels, trains or boats (please see individual itineraries). Tents and rooms are usually twin or triple share and will be single sex. The hotels with be standard tourist class with en suite facilities.

Who organises the trips?

Your safety is our top priority so we only use reputable companies to arrange the ground arrangements and flights. Cuba, Brazil and London to Amsterdam destinations are supplied by Classic Tours who are protected by ATOL 3379. India, Peru, Nepal and Vietnam destinations are supplied by the Ultimate Travel Company who are protected by ATOL 5111. Tour costs for the longer trips range between £1,000 and £1,400. All itineraries are complex and could be subject to change.

What if I can’t go?

The registration fee is non-refundable. This is because organising the trip incurs costs. If you cannot make the trip that you have signed up for, then the events team will try our best to organise to transfer you on to another Mind event for a small fee.

I'm not sure I can raise the sponsorship

We make it easy! Mind will give you all the support you need in reaching your target. This includes lots of fundraising ideas, factsheets on how to organise different events, information on Mind, a sample press release, fundraising materials and a pre event get together where you can meet your fellow cyclists or trekkers and exchange ideas. We find that most people not only meet their target, but exceed it by some way.
