Cuba
The Republic of Cuba lies in the heart of the American Mediterranean, just south of the Tropic of Cancer at the mouth of the Gulf of Mexico. It is the Caribbean's largest and least commercialised island and one of the world's last bastions of communism.
Havana, the capital, is a city like no other with its incredible atmosphere created in equal measure by the open hospitality of the habaneros and the beautiful, at times crumbling, colonial city. Old Havana is a colonial jewel, with its spacious plazas and Spanish architecture which has been lovingly restored over the past 10 years with funding from UNESCO and the European Union.
About the Trek
On arrival in Havana there will be time to explore before transferring to the northern foothills of the Sierra del Escambray Mountains, one of Cuba’s most important ranges. From there, you will trek up to 8 hours per day for 5 days deep in the Cuban countryside.
This spectacular journey will take you through limestone canyons and across forested hillsides on mule tracks and footpaths. You will see coffee plantations, orange and mango orchards and crystal clear waterfalls. Most nights you will camp in this peaceful wilderness. After the trek there’s time to relax and enjoy the pure white sands and turquoise waters of Ancon beach, close to the World Heritage town of Trinidad.
